The Seattle Asian Art Museum has been the most comprehensive collection of Asian art in the Pacific Northwest. They specialize in a diverse and growing range of historic and contemporary Asian art, they curate a rich exploration of culture through nonlinear exhibits, immersive events, and enriching lectures.

PROBLEM TO SOLVE
How can we develop a distinct brand identity for Seattle Asian Art Museum (SAAM) that distinguishes it from its parent brand Seattle Art Museum (SAM)?

RESEARCH & INSIGHT The graphical elements I created for this project  was inspired by the idea of a theme (a theme is a connector of art across time and space). These graphical elements acted like visual connectors on the page, connecting type, imagery, and layout.

DEVELOPING THE BRANDThrough many iterations the perfect recipe for the concept board was created: Breaking boundaries, connecting cultures.

The concept statement focuses on how SAAM is uniquely curated in a nonlinear fashion, allowing people to view the art from a new perspective. Organic lines overlap photos to connect imagery, paired with pops of color to emphasize uniqueness. Photography is in black and white while the art itself is left in its original and truest state. The combination of shapes and lines woven seamlessly into art and photography is a direct reflection of the history of Asia and how its boundaries have shifted over time, highlighting the unique and diverse Asian cultures that come together throughout history.

SOLUTIONThis rebrand of SAAM distinguishes itself from SAM by the use of graphical elements that act as connectors of theme, which highlights SAAM’s unique way of curating art thematically.
