Ocean Acidification Data Visualization

TIME FRAME
8 weeks

OVERVIEW
I developed a website with a series of data visualization animations to explain the causes of ocean acidification in easy-to-understand parts. By breaking down complex information into bite-sized, visually engaging pieces, the site aims to make the topic accessible, interesting and engaging for users.
ROLES
Illustration, Motion, UI/UX Design

TOOLS
Illustrator, After Effects, Webflow

PROBLEM TO SOLVE
How can we design an engaging and accessible educational website that visually communicates the complex causes of ocean acidification, empowering individuals to make informed decisions and take meaningful actions to mitigate its effects?

RESEARCH & BACKGROUND Environmental science, including topics like ocean acidification, is often a complex topic for the general public to understand. A 2018 Yale study found that only about 25% of Americans have heard of ocean acidification or coral bleaching.

Environmental science is often presented in a way that is challenging for those without a background in the subject to understand. Research articles and academic papers are typically written in technical language and filled with complex data. This level of complexity can make it difficult for the average person to grasp key concepts and implications. This inaccessibility hinders effective communication and education about critical issues like ocean acidification.

Initial sketches of concept
Vectorized in Illustrator
Animated in After Effects, exported as lottie, built into Webflow
DEMOGRAPHICThe target audience for this project includes a diverse range of people, particularly those who are unfamiliar with ocean acidification. The goal is to raise awareness and educate individuals about this critical issue through engaging and accessible content.

PROCESSAfter thoroughly researching ocean acdification and identifying the most important points, I narrowed it down to 10 key concepts. I created rough sketches of illustrations and animations in Procreate to visualize these concepts. Next, I vectorized the illustrations in Illustrator, animated them in After Effects, and exported the animations as Lottie files. Finally, I integrated these elements into Webflow to build a comprehensive and interactive website.
